Sewn Chains Binding Workshop with Erin Sweeney

November 12, 2016
10:00 am - 1:00 pm

Free Library of Philadelphia, Parkway Central

Utilizing Keith Smith’s Sewn Chains binding, workshop participants will create a multi-sectioned book with a hard cover. Sewing directly through the spine of the case, the decorative quality of this binding will be visible. The interior sections will not necessarily be blank, therefore encouraging, and hopefully inspiring, each participant to immediately start adding content. All paper materials and thread will be provided. Students should bring the following tools, if they have them: bone folder, bookbinder’s awl, cutting mat, sewing needles, scissors, and a pencil. Tools will be available to borrow.

Erin Sweeney lives and works in southern New Hampshire. She is an instructor, teaching book arts workshops at her Lovely In The Home Press. She received her MFA in Book Arts and Printmaking from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, where she was awarded the Elizabeth C. Roberts Prize for Graduate Book Arts. She also has a BFA in Sculpture from the Maine College of Art in Portland, Maine.
