Accordion Books with Lizzy Arden

October 13, 2018
10:00 am - 1:00 pm

Free Library of Philadelphia, Parkway Central

The accordion book is a folded paper structure that can be read page by page or stretched out to be displayed all at once. During this workshop, we will construct an accordion style book with its own belly band for safe keeping. For the more advanced, there will be an option to add sewn in pages to their book, if they wish. Following the construction, we will explore options of different page design by using copies of vintage photos, flowers and poetry to create a unique artist book. Participants are welcome to bring their own poems or text and xeroxed copies of their own family ancestors if they would like.

Lizzy Arden received her B.F.A. from San Diego State University (2017), was a lab assistant in the silkscreen studio and completed an internship with Brighton Press. She is currently working toward an MFA in Book Arts + Printmaking at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia(2019). Her artist’s books are informed by the psychological issues and influences affecting women’s relationships and roles in society, as well as the consequences we face if we depart from societal norms. By combining text and visual images she relates to these struggles, focusing, in particular, on the “grey areas” between extremes.
